Semiconductor technology selection addressing a broad vehicle spectrum
Lecture
1. Future E/E Architectures for passenger cars, heavy duty & other Vehicles
1.1 E/E architectures, topologies and systems

Adoption of electrified powertrains is increasing as customers appreciate the superior performance and cost efficiency of electric propulsion. As a consequence, the market demands competitive offerings for all car segments. While the idea of a standardized powertrain serving all vehicles is intriguing requirements are too diverse to be addressed by a single solution. In this sense vehicle range and charging times seem to be a common target, however the willingness to pay for such features and the necessity in daily operation is not uniform. Target of this paper is to describe requirements of the most important powertrain clusters and show how these are motivated by customer preferences, vehicle architecture and design choices in development. In a second step key features of current and future power semiconductor technologies are quantified. A specific deep dive will be done on the two newest power semiconductor device technologies SiC Trench Super Junction MOSFET and GaN HEMT. The shown waveforms from technology characterization provide switching performance data for these technologies Such values will be used for dimensioning the semiconductor area in each technology for the different powertrain configurations. Efficiency calculations for the predominant use case in each car segment (e.g. Artemis Urban for compact cars) and the important long-distance driving will show the influence on battery dimensioning. The results can be used to select semiconductor technologies with the best fit for each market segment. In the final section of the paper a case study will be presented on how a platform approach utilizing different technologies is able to cover a broad range of vehicles while minimizing the required design effort.
