The introduction of 48V in the automotive sector continues to be driven by the need for improved energy efficiency, higher performance, and the demand for cost savings.
One focus is particularly on the conversion of high-current brushless DC motor (BLDC) applications, such as electric power steering, pumps, fans, etc. Power MOSFETs are typically used to control BLDC motors because their advantages, such as low power dissipation, high current carrying capacity, and fast switching speed, improve motor control and overall system performance.
The transition from 12V to 48V affects the requirements for a BLDC motor and thus also the selection criteria for power MOSFETs.
The presentation discusses the influence of critical operating conditions such as short-circuit or blocking circuits on MOSFETs for different BLDC applications. It shows a comparison of the requirements for MOSFETs in 12V and 48V environments based on simulation results and discusses the possibilities for cost savings in power switches.
