Achieving substantial CO2 reductions in line with EU and German policies requires accelerating the electrification of heavy-duty trucks by 2030. Long-haul operations face unique challenges for charging within mandatory rest periods. The HoLa project addresses this by implementing high-performance charging infrastructure along the Berlin–Ruhr route. The first public MCS site at Lipperland Süd offers two MCS and two CCS charging points, with three additional sites toward Berlin planned for early Q1 2026. HoLa provides real-world operational insights to guide the design of scalable, reliable, and efficient charging networks for electric long-haul trucks.
Supporting such vehicles requires charging systems delivering over 1,000 kW, but grid limitations, parking shortages, and hardware integration present major obstacles. Germany lacks about 40,000 public truck parking spots, with an EU-wide deficit of roughly 400,000. Efficient management, reservation systems, and depot charging strategies are critical. Advances in battery technology will allow megawatt charging without compromising capacity, while autonomous driving and automated charging can reduce idle times and optimize throughput.
HoLa is establishing five charging parks combining MCS and CCS points, designed for up to 2.3 MW grid connections, with layouts accounting for truck maneuvering, drive-through versus drive-in configurations, and safe simultaneous charging. Operational evaluation will inform future standards for park size, spacing, and integration. The project provides a blueprint for national and international high-performance charging networks, supporting the decarbonization of road freight transport and advancing sustainable mobility.
