This paper examines the challenges and solutions associated with charging high-voltage electric vehicles (EVs) using lower-voltage charging infrastructure. As the automotive industry transitions towards higher voltage systems operating at 800-1000V for improved efficiency and performance, compatibility with existing charging infrastructure operating at 400-500V becomes a critical consideration. We analyze three primary charging modes: Bank/String Switch, Inverter Boost Mode, and DC-DC Boost Mode, comparing their efficiency, complexity, and suitability for different scenarios. Additionally, we explore various bank switching and balancing technologies, evaluating their operational strategies and safety implications.
